Windows 8 L2TP/IPsec Manual Setup Instructions

You can create a connection using the L2TP protocol manually using the following instructions: 

To add a necessary registry setting:

1. Move the cursor to the lower right corner of the screen to access the Charms bar.
2. Click on the Search option in the bar.
3. In the search box that appears, type "regedit" and press Enter.
   • You will be prompted to allow Administrator rights. Click Yes.
4. In the left pane, locate and click the folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PolicyAgent
5. Click the Edit menu and hover your cursor over New. Click DWORD Value.
   • A new registry will appear in the right pane, named New Value #1.
6. Rename that file: "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule" (this is case-sensitive and contains no spaces) and press ENTER.
7. Right-click AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule, then click Modify.
8. In the Value data box, type "2" and click OK.
9. Reboot the computer.

To configure the L2TP/IPsec connection:

1. From the Desktop, right-click on the network icon in the Windows toolbar.
2. Click Open Network and Sharing Center.
3. Click Set up a new connection or network.
4. Click Connect to a workplace then Next.
5. Ensure No, create a connection is selected. Click Next.
6. Click Use my Internet Connection (VPN).
7. In the Internet address field, type one of the server hostnames found here.
8. In the Destination name field, type a descriptive name, like VyprVPN.
9. Click Create.
10. Click Network and Sharing Center to make that window active.
11. Click Change adapter settings on the left.
12. Right-click your new connection and click Properties.
13. Click the Security tab in the pop-up window.
14. In the Type of VPN menu, select Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec).
15. Click Advanced settings.
16. Ensure that Use preshared key for authentication and enter in thisisourkey. Click OK.
17. Click the Data encryption menu.
18. Select Maximum strength encryption.
19. Click OK.
20. Close Network Connections window.

To Connect:

1. Press Win + i (the Windows key and the letter "i" at the same time).
2. Click the Network Icon at the bottom of the side pane that appears on the right.
3. Click on your new connection, then click the Connect button.
4. Type in your Giganews Login and Password in their respective fields.
5. Click OK.

To Disconnect:

1. Press Win + i (the Windows key and the letter "i" at the same time).
2. Click the Network Icon at the bottom of the side pane that appears on the right.
3. Click your VPN connection, then click Disconnect.
